Dundee United have appealed Tony Watt’s contentious red card against Motherwell.
Watt was given his marching orders by referee John Beaton following a challenge on Sean Goss prior to half-time.
Despite Beaton waving play on — United actually crafted a decent opportunity on the break — VAR David Munro called the on-field whistler over to the touchline monitor.
After viewing the angles presented to him, Beaton dismissed Watt.
While some footage suggests Watt committed a high, lack tackle, others seem to show the striker getting a slight touch on the bouncing ball before attempting to pull away, making very minor contact with Goss.
Motherwell went on to win 1-0.
Speaking after the match, United boss Liam Fox said: “Having seen the footage that the referee (Beaton) and VAR saw, I could probably say it was a red card.
“But I have also seen other footage from different sources that maybe casts a bit of doubt over it.
“So it is a bit of a contentious issue. I can sit here and mump, moan and complain about it but it HAS had a big impact.”
The Scottish FA confirmed on Monday afternoon that United have officially submitted their appeal.
A fast-track hearing will take place on Wednesday, with an independent three-person panel considering all available angles and evidence.
Should Watt be exonerated, he would be free to face former club Celtic at Parkhead next weekend.
If United lose the case, he will be sidelined for the encounter with the Hoops and next Wednesday’s home match against Kilmarnock.
