Charlie Mulgrew is set to become Dundee United’s new first-team coach.
Former Tangerines star David Bowman has been working alongside boss Liam Fox and his assistant Stevie Crawford in recent weeks, filling the void left by the departure of Adam Asghar.
However, Mulgrew, 36, is ready to move into that role following talks with Tannadice chiefs, as he takes his first steps towards a career in the dugout.
The ex-Scotland and Celtic star is currently sidelined with a persistent thigh injury but remains a key part of the United squad.
He belied advancing years to make 37 appearances for the Terrors last term as they secured fourth place in the Premiership.
The right fit
While Mulgrew’s coaching aspirations are no secret, news of his impending position was bizarrely broken on the Open Goal podcast — on which he is a semi-regular guest — by former Dundee and Celtic midfielder Simon Ferry.
Ferry claimed Mulgrew’s appointment would be “announced today”, adding “we’ll need to take this out if it isn’t”.
Subsequently, Courier Sport has learned that Mulgrew’s new deal is yet to be officially completed.
However, barring any unforeseen complications, he is expected to transition into his dual role imminently.
Hearts star Andy Halliday, reacting to the revelation, added: “At his age, it’s an unbelievable opportunity to continue playing, but already have that transition into coaching.”
Discussing the prospect of adding a first-team coach to his backroom staff, Fox recently stated: “We put that on the back burner for the last wee while because we have been so busy and had such a hectic schedule.
“It’s something we still plan to do – but it has to be the right person.
“It has to be the right fit for me and the football club.
“It’s ongoing. We will get to the November break and sit down to talk about what direction we want to go in.”
