Liam Fox watched his Dundee United side return to the bottom of the Premiership ahead of the World Cup break — before declaring: “I am seeing progress and we’ll get there.”
The Tangerines slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Aberdeen on Saturday night, with Bojan Miovski netting the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.
However, United pushed for parity in the closing stages, with Steven Fletcher coming close to levelling.
Fox has led the Terrors to three wins and one draw from their last eight Premiership fixtures — two of those by a 4-0 margin — and he was bullish regarding United’s prospects.
“Points are important, I’m not hiding from that, but I am seeing progress and we’ll get there,” vowed Fox. “We’re sitting bottom at the moment but there’s a long way to go.
“I felt there were a lot of positives in the performance; a lot of good things.
“I believe that if we keep performing to that level and standard, then we’ll pick up points on a far more regular basis.
“Aberdeen are a good side and we pushed them all the way.”
He added: “We know we have work to do. We know where we are and where we need to get to.”
Tidier
Fox lamented the nature of the Dons’ winner, which came following a quick-fire counter-attack.
Glenn Middleton lost possession as United committed bodies forward, and the ball was quickly zipped into the feet of Miovski.
The North Macedonian marksman skipped past Ross Graham before sending Duk through on goal.
The Dons forward was then hauled down by Birighitti.
“We were a bit loose in possession and then had a couple of opportunities to make a foul,” added Fox. “The keeper comes out and makes a split second decision.
“I thought it was a penalty — no complaints — and we need to be a wee bit tidier in possession, first, and then we have an opportunity to break the play up.”
Asked if he felt Birighitti may have been somewhat hesitant as he hared from his line, Fox added: “I’ve only seen it in real time and I thought he was going to get there.
“But that lad (Duk) is quick and he got a touch to the ball.”
