Declan Glass has vowed to stake his claim for a starting berth as Dundee United eye a Premiership resurgence.
Glass, 22, spent the first half of the campaign on loan with Derry City, helping the Candystripes lift the FAI Cup for the first time since 2012.
It was a fourth senior medal for the mercurial midfielder, having won League Two with Cove Rangers and the Championship title with United and Kilmarnock.
However, Glass is yet to cement his place as a Tannadice regular, making 28 appearances since his debut in October 2017.
And his top priority is to afford head coach Liam Fox food for thought as United return to training this week.
“I’m totally focused on the short-term,” Glass told Courier Sport.
“I can’t play until January and I’m back at Dundee United now. I’ll try to impress, catch the eye and give myself the best possible chance to be involved from January.
“My aim is to play for Dundee United. It’s what I enjoy, and all I’ve ever wanted to do.
“It’s a brilliant squad. There are some excellent players; some really experienced players with international experience. I know how tough it’ll be. But it’s a challenge I’m really looking forward to.”
Rapport
While Glass was dispatched to Ireland by previous United manager Jack Ross, he returns to a club bossed by Fox.
Fox was assistant head coach to Tam Courts last season — and Glass enjoys a fine rapport with the man in the dugout.
Glass added: “The gaffer knows how I work and he knows all about me. We had a good relationship when he was assistant and I’ve always enjoyed working with him.
“So, it’s up to me to go back into training and show that I have improved following my experience at Derry; prove I’m ready to knock on his door and play regularly for Dundee United.
“That’s down to me and hopefully it’s something I can achieve.”
New deal
Glass will not be able to play for any side — including United — until the registration window reopens in January, but he is emboldened by the new deal he signed prior to joining Derry.
He is now contracted to United until the summer of 2024.
“I’ve been really well looked after and to get the new contract before going out to Derry was a vote of confidence,” added Glass. “I’m really grateful for the new deal. The club has always given me support.
“United have been brilliant with me through everything; injuries and two surgeries. I can’t thank the people at the club enough — the board, Tony (Asghar, sporting director); everyone.”
