Paul Dixon has not enjoyed the best of times in his second spell at Dundee United.
After joining from city neighbours Dundee in 2008, a series of impressive performances saw him winning three Scotland caps and eventually moving to English Championship side Huddersfield Town.
Dixon returned to United in 2015 but he has struggled to recapture his best form in what has been a desperately disappointing period for the club as a whole.
All that, then, goes some way to explaining the outpouring of emotion when the Monifieth man popped up at the back post to head Dundee United’s winner in the vital Premiership play-off semi-final against Falkirk on Friday night.
As the wild celebrations among the players and fans showed, there could have been no more popular matchwinner than the man who has supported United since he was a boy.
