Dundee United’s hunt for a new manager has yet to gather any momentum, with Ray McKinnon’s departure still not officially confirmed.
After being told on Saturday night that the 2-0 home defeat to Inverness Caledonian Thistle was his last game in charge, McKinnon is understood to have been back at Tannadice yesterday for a meeting to try and formalise the parting of the ways.
That will, of course, mean agreeing a financial package.
It could also mean the departure of his assistant, Laurie Ellis, and the director of football, Darren Taylor.
The frontrunners for the post won’t have changed in 24 hours, with out of work trio Jim McIntyre, John Hughes and Peter Houston obvious candidates.
Courier Sport understands that all three would be keen to have discussions with chairman Stephen Thompson.
And, despite a slow start to the week, getting a man in place in time for Saturday’s trip to Dumbarton is still a realistic target.
Meanwhile, former United coach Simon Donnelly has given his support to ex-Celtic team-mate Hughes.
Jackie McNamara’s number two at Tannadice said: “I think big Yogi would be a great fit for United. I’m not just saying that because I know him.
“He’s a lively character for sure and is ideal for any dressing-room which needs lifted.
“I haven’t seen that much of United this season but it seems they have some very good players who should probably be doing a bit better in terms of results.
“I’m sure he would jump at the chance of the job. If he got it, then he would stir up the dressing-room in the right sort of way.
“That’s one of his biggest qualities, being able to motivate, and I know that from our playing days together at Celtic.
“There was never a dull moment and that included travelling to training as well as during it when he kept everyone on their toes.
“But, when it was time to get down to hard work, he was as professional as anyone and his desire for success shone through all the time.”
Donnelly added: “I know things maybe didn’t go so well for him at Raith Rovers but there’s no doubts he relishes a challenge and has shown he can deliver when it’s needed and when it’s against the odds also.
“Dundee United are a Premiership club.
“I had some great times up there and know how much the club means to their fans.
“When you think of United’s potential, they are a genuine miss from the top-flight.
“So the next appointment is going to be very important to get it right and make sure the team get back on track.
“I don’t think Yogi would disappoint. Like any other club, I know there will be other candidates but for me I can’t think of anyone better than my old Celtic team-mate under the current circumstances.
“It will be interesting to see what happens next.
“I still have an affinity with United. You never like to see one of your old clubs struggling but I do feel they need a big character to move things forward because we all know how important it is to regain Premiership football.”
