Paul McMullan is confident Dundee United’s momentum won’t have stopped for a Christmas break.
Instead, the Tangerines hope to extend the festivities into Friday night, when they play St Mirren in Paisley.
McMullan scored twice in the Tangerines’ comfortable 3-0 win over Livingston last Saturday, with Scott McDonald’s superb second goal the meat in the sandwich.
It was a result that perfectly set the second-placed Tannadice men up for their massive top-of-the-table clash against the Championship leaders.
The much-anticipated match is one that will grab the attention of the whole of Scottish football and United are determined to use it to go back ahead of the Buddies with a game in hand going into the new year.
McMullan feels United’s confidence will have stayed sky-high over Christmas thanks to Csaba Laszlo’s men continuing an excellent recent run that has seen them win six and draw one of their last seven league games.
McMullan said: “We have been pretty consistent of late.
“The only blemish on our recent record is the draw at Brechin and even in that game we probably should have been three or four goals up at half-time and had the game won.
“So the boys are playing some really good football just now and hopefully we can keep that run going down at Paisley.
“Against Livingston, we once again created a lot of chances and that seems to be the case every week now.
“At least we scored three and that made the scoreline look comfortable enough, even though it could have been even better.
“To be honest, though, if you are going to come into the dressing room and offer the boys three goals every week then we will bite your hand off.
“We are playing some good stuff and I think that was shown by the second goal against Livi that was scored by Scott McDonald.
“I thought it was excellent, with some great build-up play from Jamie Robson and Scott Fraser.
“Overall, the boys are really pleased with the way we are playing and we are definitely all looking forward to Friday now.
“The last time we played St Mirren here at Tannadice we did really well against them. I think 2-1 probably flattered them that day when you consider the chances we had.
“I would take a repeat of that – definitely.
“There is a gap between the two of us (United and St Mirren) and the rest of the teams now and that’s down to both sides picking up points while others are dropping them.
“There is a wee bit of space as a result.
“We have all enjoyed our Christmas and now the focus is on that game.”
On a personal level, McMullan was delighted to get on the scoresheet, no once but twice, considering how long it had been since he last hit the back of the net.
That was in an Irn-Bru Cup clash against Alloa on September 2, while you had to go back to the opening day of the Championship season in Inverness to find his last league goal.
He said: “It was great for me because it had been a while since I scored.
“So when the first one went in it was a relief.
“I actually had a few options to pass the ball but I just kept my composure, fired a shot off and it went in.
“Then it was nice to round off a good 3-0 win with my second goal.”
