Comment: Desperately-disappointing defeat at home for Dundee United

Not a happy man - Csaba Laszlo.
Not a happy man - Csaba Laszlo.

Dundee United’s automatic promotion hopes were dealt a potentially-fatal blow with this demoralising 3-0 defeat at Tannadice to Morton.

Prior to kick-off, all the pressure was on the home players following league leaders St Mirren’s 2-1 win over Dunfermline at East End Park on Friday night.

The Buddies extended their advantage to 11 points meaning the game against the Greenock outfit was definitely in the “must-win” category for United.

However, the home side dismally failed to respond to the challenge against a Morton team who looked sharper and hungrier throughout.

United were desperately poor in the first 45, barely creating a chance of their own while conceding a poor headed goal by Thomas O’Ware.

It was no surprise that the half-time whistle was greeted with a chorus of boos from the home support.

The fans’ mood certainly did not improve when Morton doubled their advantage just two minutes after the restart thanks to a long-range screamer by Scott Tiffoney.

Jim Duffy’s men made it three in the 80th minute with another superb goal by Jack Iredale with the result leaving Csaba Laszlo’s side increasingly looking to the play-offs to hopefully realise their promotion dreams.
