Captain Mark Reynolds will be the cornerstone that provides a firm foundation for Dundee United’s future.
That is the opinion of Tangerines boss Robbie Neilson, who was delighted to secure Reynolds on a three-year pre-contract deal.
Just as the cornerstone is the one that dictates the position of a building, so Neilson views Reynolds as providing the base on which to rebuild United into a force in Scottish football.
The 31-year-old skipper will lead the Tannadice men out at Inverness tomorrow as they continue their promotion push but it is the long term that Neilson was considering when he got the Reynolds deal over the line.
The United boss said: “It was a massive thing for us, getting Mark on that deal.
“Indeed, getting him here in January was massive for us.
“In my opinion, Mark is a top-four club in Scotland player.
“In the dressing room and off the park, he has been magnificent.
“He trains well and has leadership qualities on the pitch. Indeed, everything I hoped he would bring to the club he has brought to the club.
“To get him secured on a longer-term deal was great because he is going to be a cornerstone of this team.
“We have a good group of young players coming through and you need guys like Mark to give them guidance.”
