Montrose manager Paul Hegarty watched his side end their season with a home win over Berwick to clinch eighth place in League Two.
He then reflected that things were a little different from 12 months ago when his side had to win a do or die play-off against Brora Rangers to preserve their league status.
Hegarty said: “We have slightly kicked on from last year and we have the nucleus of a decent squad. Now we must add to it and improve again.
“For the first 25 minutes we were the better side but could not take advantage.
“We scored just before the break thanks to some great play by Chris Templeman and a wonderful strike from Gary Fraser.
“In the second half we never got out of the bit but it was important we kept a clean sheet.
“That is clean sheets in successive weeks and we have had very few of them.
“My players gave everything as they always do, although they are not as composed as I would like them to be.
“I want to bring two or three in to help the young players as our senior players have carried us this season.”
Montrose took the lead on 43 minutes. Templeman did superbly to get a cross in and Fraser hammered home a shot on the turn.
Berwick raised their game in the second half but could find no way past Jordan Millar, who made three fine saves.
Montrose almost sealed the points on 85 minutes when Ross Campbell was denied by Walker.
Deep into added time, Millar made a miraculous save to keep out a close-range drive from Barry Hogg.
Hegarty says Montrose are doing all they can to keep top scorer Gary Fraser.
“The club have made Gary a good offer,” he said.
“I know he is talking to other clubs and he has kept me informed.
“We would like Gary to stay and he knows that.”
