The prospect of St Johnstone losing Matty Kennedy at the end of the season has increased after Aberdeen took their interest in Tommy Wright’s star man to the next level.
Courier Sport understands that the Dons have now officially informed the Perth club that they want to recruit Kennedy in the summer and talks have begun with his agent.
The 25-year-old former Kilmarnock player will be able to sign a pre-contract agreement should he choose to.
Kennedy has gone on record to state his happiness at McDiarmid Park, as has Wright with his desire to keep him, but it is no secret that Aberdeen can blow Saints out of the water in terms of wages and now hold a much stronger hand.
Meanwhile, Airdrie have agreed with Saints that winger Euan O’Reilly’s loan move with the Diamonds be cancelled due to an ankle injury that has already kept him out for nearly five months.
The 19-year-old, who shone on loan at Lowland League side BSC Glasgow last season, was due to be with the Diamonds for the season however after making only two starts and three substitute appearances, and not featuring since a 1-0 win at Montrose on August 10, it has been agreed that O’Reilly will return to Perth.
Airdrie’s director of football Stuart Millar said: “It has been unfortunate for Euan as he started off the season as a key player in our squad.
“He has been getting treatment from St Johnstone for a few months now however he is not expected to be back playing soon so cancelling the temporary transfer is the right thing to do.”
