St Johnstone are in no rush to appoint a new manager but two strong contenders have emerged as early frontrunners to replace Tommy Wright – Callum Davidson and John Robertson.
With football not expected to return in Scotland for months, Saints chairman Steve Brown can take his time to sift through applications for the McDiarmid Park job, of which there will be many.
The credentials of the candidates ahead of the pack at the moment are beyond question, however.
Davidson was Wright’s assistant in the glory years when Saints won the Scottish Cup and were Europa League regulars.
And the fact that he has added to his CV with successful spells as a number two at Dunfermline and, most recently, Millwall, strengthens his hand.
Inverness Caledonian Thistle boss Robertson has the experience of being the man in charge at several clubs over the last two decades, and his work on a tight budget in the Highlands has led to the Hearts legend being talked about as Daniel Stendel’s successor at Tynecastle, should they go down to the Championship.
The interim manager for Saints after Wright’s exit was confirmed on Saturday morning is Alec Cleland.
He has yet to say whether he wants to be considered for the post full-time.
