Caretaker Alec Cleland has backed St Johnstone to choose the right management team.
And he wants to be part of it.
Tommy Wright’s number two isn’t getting caught up in talk of him succeeding the Northern Irishman as Saints boss.
His sole wish is staying at McDiarmid Park in some capacity.
“The chairman has asked me to be caretaker,” said Cleland. “I’ll do that and the club will go through the process of appointing a new manager.
“I’ve spoken to Kirsten (Robertson) and made my intentions clear – I want to continue to be part of this club. I’ll never get involved in that process. I don’t like saying: ‘I want this job’ or ‘I don’t want that job’.
“When I look at the managers they have appointed, everyone can see that whatever that process is, it works. They’ve been getting it right. I know the club will get it right again.”
Meanwhile, Cleland’s predecessor as right-hand man to Wright, Callum Davidson, has been backed to be a top boss by Gary Rowett. But the Millwall manager doesn’t want to lose his assistant to the club he played for and coached at.
“He’s local to St Johnstone and was there for a long time, so it’s a natural link,” said Rowett. “Of course, I don’t want him to go anywhere but he would be a fabulous candidate.”
