It was the Stevie May show in Peterhead as he paid his own tribute to Scotland by scoring two penalties.
OK, it may or may not have been in recognition of the Scots, who won the shootout in Serbia to reach the Euro finals on Thursday, but it certainly sent St Johnstone into the next round of the Betfred Cup as Group C winners.
We even had the Yes Sir, I Can Boogie song playing over the tannoy at Balmoor to add to the sense of celebration.
May gave the visitors the lead from the penalty spot four minutes after the break then repeated the feat on the hour-mark.
Substitute Chris Kane made it 3-0 with a great strike on the run on 77 minutes before an own goal by Shaun Rooney handed the home team hope just a minute later.
The convincing success gave them 10 points, while Dundee United finished second with eight points and a better goal difference than the Blue Toon.
The big news for Saints fans pre-match was the debut handed to Israeli frontman Guy Melamed – one of six changes.
Also back in the side were Jamie McCart, Craig Conway, Murray Davidson, Michael O’Halloran and May.
Out from the team that drew 0-0 with Dundee United on Tuesday went Liam Gordon, Scott Tanser, Craig Bryson, David Wotherspoon, Calum Hendry and Chris Kane.
On 12 minutes a terrific run into the box by May looked full of promise for the visitors but the ball was nicked away from him before he could shoot.
May then burst clear up the left for the Perth men on 21 minutes. He made it into the box but didn’t have a decent angle from which to shoot and his cutback, aimed at Conway, was grabbed by Blue Toon keeper Lenny Wilson.
On 25 minutes, Peterhead’s Gary Fraser curled in a freekick from 25 yards but the ball flew over the bar, while Conway sent a strike wide at the other end after being set up by Melamed.
With 36 minutes on the clock, it looked like Conway had whipped a freekick into the net for St Johnstone from the tightest of angles but instead the ball missed by inches before bouncing around behind the goal.
The Perth men took only four minutes of the second period to take the lead thanks to a penalty.
May was the scorer, picking himself off the deck before blasting the spotkick down the middle after the home side’s Jason Brown had fouled the striker following a corner.
There was a near-thing for Saints when the hosts’ Scott Brown hit the post with a header on 54 minutes but they were 2-0 ahead on the hour, thanks to another penalty.
May was fouled again, this time by Kieran Freeman, and he was up again to fire home an almost identical kick.
Kane, who had come for May, made it three with a clean shot on the angle on 77 minutes after a pass from Hendry.
However, Peterhead got one back just a minute later when Rooney bundled the ball into his own net under pressure from home sub Derek Lyle.
There were late efforts from Booth and Hendry as the visitors threatened to stretch their lead again but, in the end, they were happy with what they got, while the hosts’ Brown sent a shot wide of the post in the final minute.
