Pride at his players’ comeback performance to get a draw at Hamilton outweighed any slight disappointment St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright may have had at not climbing to second in the Premiership table.
Saints went down to a late goal in the Betfred Cup on Thursday night but it was their turn against Accies.
Liam Craig scored in the 82nd minute and a 1-1 draw was the least Wright felt his players deserved.
They were utterly dominant in the second half and over the course of the 90 minutes had 16 corners.
“We were disappointed to be one down,” he said.
“If that’s a free-kick (the decision to penalise Joe Shaughnessy for a run of the mill aerial challenge) then referees will be blowing up every 30 seconds,” he said. “It was very soft.
“But we dominated the second half and fully deserved the point.
“With a bit better decision making we might have got the winner.
“The boys had a hard game on Thursday night and they played with real character.
“It’s been a really good start to the season and the point keeps us on the coat-tails of Aberdeen and Hearts who are two massive clubs.”
Richard Foster had to be substituted after just four minutes.
“He felt his thigh in the warm-up,” Wright said. “He got through it but he was limping after his first kick of the ball.”
Aaron Comrie came on to make his debut and Wright was full of praise for the teenager.
He said: “I could have put Liam Gordon on but we’ve got a lot of faith in Aaron as well. Liam played on Thursday and that’s two very good young defenders we’ve got coming through.”
The point takes Accies off the bottom but manager Martin Canning was frustrated that it wasn’t all three.
“For us it’s another one that got away,” he reflected.
