Kevin McDonald is training with St Johnstone ahead of the Perth side’s crunch midweek Premiership clash with Dundee.

The ex-Dark Blues, Fulham and Scotland midfielder was put through his paces by Dundee United in recent weeks, with Tangerines boss Tam Courts hailing the 33-year-old’s approach.

However, McDonald swapped United’s St Andrew’s training base for McDiarmid Park on Monday as Saints gaffer Callum Davidson looks to bolster his midfield options.

McDonald has targeted a return to football after recovering from a kidney transplant, training first with Dundee in October of last year, before pitching up with United in mid-January.

Saints are on a club record-equalling 10-game losing streak, with their weekend Scottish Cup loss to Kelty Hearts arriving as a new low point in their terrible run of form.

Saints’ midfield weak spot

They now face a huge Premiership basement clash with 11th placed Dundee on Wednesday night, where victory would see them climb off the foot of the table.

However, an 11th consecutive defeat would allow James McPake’s Dark Blues to move five points clear of the Perth side.

January arrivals like Dan Cleary, John Mahon, Tony Gallacher and Nadir Ciftci have bolstered Saints’ rear guard and forward line, however, the middle of the park remains a weak spot.
