Comment: St Johnstone can still be pleased by start to campaign despite bitter defeat

Saints concede a late goal to Partick Thistle.

If they have any energy left, the St Johnstone players are probably still kicking themselves this morning after Saturday’s game against Partick Thistle.

Saints had a golden opportunity to go clear second top of the Ladbrokes Premiership table after Aberdeen’s earlier loss to Celtic at Pittodrie.

Instead they succumbed to a disappointing defeat, which hurt even more because of the late, late nature of the Jags winner.

A week that had begun so promisingly with the comfortable win over Tayside rivals Dundee last Sunday, followed by the deserved draw and impressive performance against Rangers on Wednesday evening in Govan ended in bitter disappointment.

I felt that having equalised so quickly against Thistle, Saints would go on to take all three points but the players would probably be the first to admit that they failed to create enough chances after Steven MacLean’s goal.

Whether the midweek efforts at Ibrox had taken their toll, only the squad will know but as the striker himself touched on, looking at the “bigger picture”, St Johnstone can still be pleased with the start they have made to the season.

Having 18 points on the board at this stage of the campaign is an impressive return.

However, success breeds success and the Perth players have had a lot of it in recent seasons and simply want more.

I for one would be willing to bet that the next time they have the opportunity to go second top of the table, they will seize it with alacrity.
