St Johnstone goalkeeper Zander Clark admitted he was “bamboozled” as to how he managed to score an own goal.
A cross from the right by Motherwell full-back Richard Tait on 12 minutes ended up in the back of the home net via Clark’s arms.
It was an odd one and the 24 year-old, who had the bottle to face the media after the 1-1 draw to discuss his error, didn’t really have an explanation.
Clark said: “I am as bamboozled as anyone by how it ended up in the back of the net.
“I don’t know if there was a bit of movement on it (the cross) and I’ve not seen it back.
“It felt pretty strange, how it has gone in.
“That’s the joys of goalkeeping, I suppose.
“You can be a hero one minute and a villain the next.
“It is part and parcel of what we do and I just need to learn from it.”
As well as taking questions, Clark also deserved credit for not letting the mistake get to him during the remainder of the match.
“It was easy to put it to the back of my mind because it happened pretty early in the game and there was still plenty of time left,” he said.
“I couldn’t afford to dwell on it.
“It gets you down a bit after the game and it’s not nice.
“Barring that, I didn’t have a save to make.
“It could have proved quite costly but fortunately for me we managed to get a draw out of it. It would have been more painful if that goal had cost us three points.”
He had Chris Kane to thank for the equaliser just after the hour-mark – and he was appreciative.
Clark added: “I have told Kano I owe him one.
“I will repay him with a beer or two.
“We had a few chances and their keeper Craig Samson had a great save from Blair Alston near the end.
“It was a pleasing team performance and another point on the board.
“We played some good stuff and we were unfortunate not to get all three points.”
