Callum Davidson offers St Johnstone signings update amid Ryan McGowan link

Ryan McGowan: linked with a move to St Johnstone

Callum Davidson hopes to seal “a couple” of new signings for St Johnstone by the weekend.

And former Hearts star Ryan McGowan could be one of them, according to a new report.

Davidson watched his side claim the first win of their League Cup campaign away to Elgin City on Tuesday.

He was pleased with his side’s attacking display – but concerned by the defensive frailties on show.

And Davidson aims to have bolstered his options by the time Ayr United visit McDiarmid Park for Saturday’s final cup game, with McGowan – who has also featured for Dundee and Dundee United in Scotland – reportedly high on the list.

“Hopefully we’ll get another couple of faces in by Saturday,” said the Saints manager.

“We’ve been working really hard on that. We know the areas we need to target and we’ll hopefully get players in.”

Australian World Cup star McGowan (32) was most recently with Kuwait SC in the Gulf state’s top league and, according to the Herald, is keen on a return to Scotland.

Action taken on cheap goals

Davidson had demanded urgency from his players in Elgin off the back of a disappointingly flat display against Queen of the South.

He got it in an attacking sense – and was pleased with the performances of Jamie Murphy, Graham Carey and Adam Montgomery in particular.

Nevertheless, he was clearly unhappy with the two goals coughed up late on – and vowed to take action.

“I asked for enthusiasm to go and play football,” he said.

“It’s great when you’re the team keeping the ball more. You can play with a tempo and I thought we did that at times.

“You could see the urgency there. There were a lot of runs in behind Elgin.

“That willingness to run was good. There were good things there.

“But, for me, we’re giving away too many sloppy goals and that’s something I’ll be rectifying.”
