St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright admitted that “outstanding” Joe Shaughnessy has surpassed his expectations.
And getting the Irishman tied up on a new two-year contract has spared the Perth boss what would have been a “very difficult” task to replace him.
Wright said: “We are delighted to get Joe signed up because he’s been a key player for us over the last two seasons.
“He has been outstanding and he’s been even better than I thought he would be.
“I knew he was good enough to play but the way he settled in so quickly has really allowed him to kick on.
“Although he’d played right-back a lot and started with us there because of circumstances I always saw him as a centre-back.
“His consistency has been excellent and he’s built up a good partnership with Ando at the back.
“Over the last 18 months or so you have really seen him grow into himself and build up his confidence.
“Part of it is age because he’s filled out into his frame a lot but he’s also worked hard on his programmes.
“He’s athletic, quick, good on the ball and good in the air – so he’s got all the ingredients you look for in a central defender.
“Joe also has a very good attitude so he’s someone we were very keen to keep around the place.
“It would have been very difficult to replace him.
“Thankfully it never seemed likely he would leave because he’s enjoyed it here and knows he’s progressed.”
Shaughnessy joins Richard Foster and David Wotherspoon in agreeing contract extensions and there could be more following soon.
“We are still speaking to other people and I’m hoping to have more signed up shortly,” Wright reported.
“The talks are going well, we’re making progress and there has been no negativity. The talks are ongoing and hopefully they’ll reach the outcome we’re looking for.
