David Wotherspoon deserves the accolade of St Johnstone’s greatest ever player, according to manager Callum Davidson.
And the Perth club will get the benefit of his World Cup experience when he returns from Qatar.
Thursday is the Saints midfielder’s last chance of game-time with Canada, as John Herdman’s squad complete their group fixtures with a clash against Morocco that only has pride at stake for an already eliminated nation.
Davidson is keeping his fingers crossed that Wotherspoon sees action in the Al Thumama stadium contest.
But even if the three-time cup winner doesn’t get his substitute’s bib off he’s already made a persuasive case to be regarded as the best Saints player of all time.
Also, he’ll be in the perfect frame of mind and physical condition to be a star performer in the Premiership after his return to Scotland.
“Hopefully David will get a chance to play in Canada’s final game because that would cap an incredible experience for him,” said Davidson.
“Canada have played well but have been a bit unlucky with the two results so far.
“If David can get some minutes it would give him something massive to look back on at the end of his career because only a few players can say they’ve been to a World Cup.
“He can be very proud of getting there and being part of their squad.
“We will benefit from David being there, he will come back with a spring in his step and his confidence boosted from the experience.”
‘Being from the area elevates it’
On the Saints ‘greatest’ debate, Davidson added: “There have not been many St Johnstone players at World Cups over the years (Jason Scotland is the only other) so it’s a huge achievement for David and for the club.
“The fact he’s from Perth and a fan makes it even better, in my book.
“You look at his performances for us over the last 10 years and the three trophies he’s won.

“For me, he’s right up there with the greatest players in St Johnstone’s history.
“That’s taking nothing away from other players who have played for the club but what he’s done over the years has been remarkable.
“And being from this area – this is his hometown team – just elevates it and makes it even more special for him and his family.”
