Tommy Wright would not be drawn on the Conor Sammon link with St Johnstone.
And the Perth boss has insisted that there are several options being considered to bolster his attack.
“We have been linked with a lot of players over the summer,” said Wright. “We have three or four irons in the fire at the minute and are working hard to bring players in.
“We are in talks and will have to see what develops over the next few days. With one I’d like to think we are pretty close.
“We have a strong squad but it is no secret we are looking to add to it.
“We still have a couple of bits of business to do but the mood is very positive in the camp.
“I believe we are going to strengthen the squad and that is important. Managers are all looking at the top end of the pitch and that is the hardest area to operate in. Everyone is looking for players who put the ball in the back of the net on a regular basis.”
Saints complete their preparations for the new season with a friendly against East Fife tomorrow.
“This is our last pre-season game so it is an important one in the build-up,” said Wright. “I’m looking for a good work out to sign off pre-season.
“It’s good that we are playing on an artificial surface bearing in mind we open up the league campaign at Kilmarnock.
“This was the one weekend that concerned me because we had a team lined up which fell through.
“So it’s good to get this arranged.
“The players have responded really well to going out of Europe. Looking back, of course we were disappointed but FK Trakai have done really well, bearing Norrkoping, one of the best teams in Sweden, in the next round. It shows they weren’t mugs or the pub team some people were claiming.
“We know where we went wrong in Europe but the main thing is that the players have responded well and played some great football in pre-season matches, scoring some good goals, and we have looked solid again
“Our younger players had a game against Dunfermline in midweek which went well with a 3-0 win. Brian Easton got 75 minutes and Graham Cummins also got game time after his illness.
“Keith Watson got 90 minutes. He might not be in my plans but he is fit and raring to go. Hopefully we can get him sorted out with something as quickly as possible. He will do a really good job for someone.
“Zander (Clark) started light training this week and will be stepping it up. He will definitely be back in full training on Monday.
“Macca (Steven MacLean) won’t play on plastic. There has been no change of policy because he had a cameo in Vilnius.”
