Both St Johnstone and Dundee needed to bounce back after painful weekend defeats and criticism from their managers – and the Perth side were the team to do it.
Callum Hendry put them ahead early in the first half with his first league goal for the club on his first league start of the season.
Then, after chances for both sides in an end to end opening period, Saints got their two-goal cushion thanks to a fine individual effort from Matty Kennedy on 70 minutes.
The result takes Saints above Motherwell into seventh position.
The only good news for Dundee was that their relegation rivals St Mirren and Hamilton Accies both lost as well.
