For a man who was confined to his sick bed for the early part of the week, Richie Ramsay believed he did himself justice in the first round of The Open.
There was a time when the Aberdonian thought he would be withdrawing from the event without setting foot on Royal Troon, and his recovery from illness wasn’t sufficient to allow him to play any warm-up holes.
But last week’s top 10 finisher at the Scottish Open gave it his best shot on day one and, at two over par, has a fighting chance of making the cut.
“Looking at it, I had a really good attitude today,” Ramsay said. “A great attitude.
“I played lovely. So steady. I just didn’t make anything.
“I feel miles better. Tuesday from about 11 in the morning to seven at night I was in my bed – or somewhere else!
“I don’t know what it was that I picked up but I just suddenly felt unwell. I’ve never had that before. But fortunately it came on really quick and left really quick.
“At one point I was lying in my bed and thinking that I wasn’t sure if I was going to play. I couldn’t even keep water down.
“Like I say, I’m feeling better and I’ll rest up for tomorrow because I’ve got to go and shoot a good number to stay in it.”
