Arbroath tennis ace Jonny O’Mara has expressed his sheer joy at reaching the last eight of the Australian Open.
The Scots star has made it into his first grand slam quarter-final along with doubles partner Marcelo Arevalo from El Salvador.
O’Mara took to social media to celebrate the memorable last-16 win over seventh seeds John Peers and Michael Venus, with the Angus player and Arevalo triumphing 6-4 7-6 (9-7) over the strongly-fancied home pair in Melbourne.
O’Mara said: “Quarter-finals!! Amazing atmosphere on court today. So pumped to get the win!”
The 24-year-old and Alevaro face fourth seeds Ivan Dodic, of Croatia, and Filip Polasek, from Slovakia, in their quarter-final in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
Three British players are through to the last eight of the men’s doubles after Joe Salisbury and Ken Skupski followed O’Mara in winning third-round clashes.
Salisbury and his American partner Rajeev Ram are the 11th seeds and have been consistent performers at the slams.
They reached the quarter-finals at the French Open last year, and a 6-4 7-6 upset of sixth seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos saw them match that.
Skupski’s partnership with his brother Neal ended last summer when the latter joined up with Jamie Murray. But, in just his second tournament with Mexican Santiago Gonzalez, 36-year-old Skupski has matched his best grand slam result.
Their latest victory was a 6-3 6-4 success against 16th seeds Austin Krajicek from the USA and Croatian Franko Skugor.
None of the British players will yet face each other, although O’Mara and Skupski could meet in the semi-finals.
