Young Angus endurance ace Sandy Mitchell will swap his PlayStation for the steering wheel of a190mph Lamborghini GT3 when he tackles California’s iconic Laguna Seca circuit this weekend.
The 19-year-old from Letham, near Forfar heads to the famous Monterey track for the penultimate double-header in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North American Championship.
Partnered by his Italian team-mate, Andrea Amici in their No. 1 Prestige Performance Lamborghini Huracán, prepared by Wayne Taylor Racing, Mitchell is looking forward to realising a childhood dream at the daunting 2.23-mile track.
“Laguna Seca is a track I’ve grown up playing on the PlayStation since I was a little kid,” said the British Racing Drvers’ Club Rising Star, who sits just 11 points off the championship lead with four races remaining.
“It’s an iconic circuit with some amazing corners, like the famous Corkscrew, so I’m really looking forward to experiencing it. I’m sure the Lamborghini will be a lot of fun round it.”
Mitchell, part of the Lamborghini Squadra Corse GT3 Junior Program, is determined to carry forward the blistering pace he’s shown over the last few races.
“The car has been super-fast these last few rounds; I’ve set fastest lap in the last three races, and set two new lap records at Road America and Virginia.
“We’ve definitely got the pace, so we’ll be aiming to get everything spot-on right through the weekend. Hopefully we can score another couple of wins,” said the Black Bull Whisky-backed racer.
“If we can do that, then it would throw the championship wide open when we head to Spain for the final two races next month.”
