Dundee High were only playing for pride on Saturday against BT National I league champions league winners Watsonians.
And they ended the season with pride intact and an agonising one point behind Marr, who clinched the play of spot but the 47-21 win against the Myreside men was as good a way to end their season as any.
They went behind to an early converted try but then the much-changed Dundee side clicked into gear.
Scrum half Harry Sampson landed a try – converted by Duncan Leese – to tie the scores before they took lead with a Ewan Fox try.
Leese converted prop Johnny Gibson’s try, although Watsonians pulled one back to take the score to 19-14.
Hooker Darell Russell was next on the scoresheet with the bonus point fourth try which Leese converted, as he did with the next try from lock Connor Wood.
Again the visitors hit back but wing Matt O’Sullivan ran in try number five for Dundee and Leese completed a splendid afternoon with the conversion of his own try to bring up a haul of 17 points.
In BT National 2, Kirkcaldy finish sixth and Perthshire ended their BT National 3 campaign with a 38-10 win over East Kilbride with a six-try win and a fourth place in the table which will at worst end up as fifth if Haddington win their final fixture next week.
Shire’s tries came from Garka Grottate, Rory McKay, Owen McDonald, Matt Stewart, Ryan Miller and Dom O’Connor, with O’Conner nailing four out of six conversions.
Meanwhile a ruthless Alloa side clinched the BT Caledonia Division Two (Midlands) title with a 118-14 win at home to Kinross.
The Earlsfield men went into the final match of the campaign five points behind Harris FP who had completed their league programme by defeating Alloa seven days earlier.
With a superior points difference than the Dundee men, Alloa’s task was clear – a win with a bonus point would secure the silverware. And they ensured there was no risk of another slip up, dominating proceedings from the outset and running in 18 tries in total.
It said much for the progress of Harris under coach Bruce Beckett that the title race went to the final day.
And while the Elliot Road men were understandably disappointed to lose out on points difference, they will be ready to challenge again next season.
Elsewhere, Glenrothes saw their challenge for the Division One title formally ended by a 26-23 defeat away to Caithness.
The Fifers made a slow start and were 19 points down after 20 minutes.
However, they had trimmed the deficit by half time through an unconverted Kain Duguid try. Cammy Goodall and Ross Hutchison had a try apiece, the latter converted by Shaun Gray who then slotted two penalties to edge Glenrothes into a four point lead which they still held with two minutes to play.
But the hosts snatched the victory with a late converted try to secure a result which means Glenrothes, who still have two matches to play, will finish third in the table.
Crieff & Strathearn remain firmly in the Division 3 title race, three points adrift, after returning from the trip to face Dundee University Medics with a 34-12 win to their credit.
The destination of the title will be decided on Saturday when the leading duo meet in a winner takes all clash at Sunnyside.
Waid Academy posted a 37-10 win at home to Fife Southern and Glenrothes Development XV took all five league points when they saw off Bo’ness 24-14.
