The ball is in Leone Nakarawa’s court on whether he comes back to Glasgow, with the Warriors’ contract offer on the Fijian’s table.
The second row, sacked by Paris giants Racing 92 where he was earning a reported €600,000 a year for not returning to the club after the Rugby World Cup, is of “great interest” to the Warriors, said head coach Dave Rennie.
“I’ve had a conversation with him, like half the world I imagine, but there is nothing to confirm yet,” he said, in response to reports from France that the former European Player of the Year had rejected a contract with Bayonne and wanted a six-month deal with Glasgow.
“He is certainly someone we would be interested in. He is tight with the club, he’s got a lot of history here and he’s a hell of a player.
“There are a lot of options for him so we will see how that plays out. Is the ball in his court? It’s probably fair to say that. We have spoken to him and put our best foot forward, like a lot of clubs I imagine. We will see what pans out from there.”
Meanwhile Rennie confirmed that Glasgow want a new deal with Tommy Seymour, who announced his retirement from international rugby this week.
Seymour signed a one-year extension to his current contract that expires in May, but the head coach said he hoped they were moving towards an agreement.
“We’ve been in discussions with Tommy about his future,” continued Rennie. “He loves the club, he wants to stay and we want him to be here.
“There’s a couple of things that need sorted, I’d imagine but we expect Tommy to be here long-term.”
Rennie said Seymour’s presence during the international windows would be a huge boost to the Warriors.
“It’s great from that perspective, to have someone of his experience around at a time when we’re often missing players,” he continued. “He’s really enthusiastic about playing 15 – it’s a different role for him and has got him out of his comfort zone a little bit, but not too dissimilar to wing.
“He gets a lot more ball in his hands, so he’s thriving on that.”
