Edinburgh Rugby have plugged one of their remaining gaps in next year’s playing squad by agreeing a two-year deal with Welsh stand-off Jason Tovey.
The 27-year-old joined the club on loan from Dragons in March and scored 32 points in just four outings. He’ll battle Scotland cap Duncan Weir for stand-off duties for the capital club next season but can also play at full-back.
The move to bring Tovey to Edinburgh was something of a surprise after the club let Scotland cap Greig Tonks leave for London Irish, but his trial run north of the border proved to be a success.
“Having the opportunity to come up to Edinburgh and play some rugby was definitely the right move for me and I’m loving it here,” he said.
“I couldn’t have asked for anything more from the boys over the last six weeks, it’s great being out on the field with them and I’m enjoying my rugby again.”
Tovey was both official man of the match and the supporter’s choice in his debut against Zebre and is looking forward to the move to Myreside next season.
“Moving ground in January to Myreside is looking at what’s best for the club and for our supporters,” he said. “Being at a smaller ground will help create a better atmosphere which will be huge for the boys.”
Tovey has played age grade level for Wales and for the national sevens team, as well as being part of trainbing squads prior to the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
Edinburgh head coach Alan Solomons said: “It is terrific news for the club that Jason has committed to us.
“He is a quality flyhalf and an excellent goal kicker, who has added huge value over the past month or so.
“He is also a first class bloke who has fitted in extremely well to the squad.
“I believe he will make a huge contribution next season and look forward to working with him.”
