A Fife MP has apologised for an “ill-judged” tweet that an opponent suggested had sectarian undertones.
The SNP’s Peter Grant, who represents Glenrothes and Central Fife, made a joke about Jacob Rees-Mogg being a “Catholic Brexiteer”.
It appeared to play on the assumption that Catholics eat fish on a Friday as part of observing weekly meat abstinence.
The message also made reference to the row over the broken promise that the UK would leave the hated Common Fisheries Policy in March 2019.
The tweet read: “Jacob is a Catholic Brexiteer. On Friday he sells out fishermen”.
Ross Thomson, the Scottish Conservative MP for Aberdeen South, said the “remarks could well be viewed as sectarian”.
“This may have been an ill-conceived attempt at humour, but a member of Parliament should know better,” Mr Thomson.
“Targeting somebody because of their faith is not acceptable.”
Mr Grant said: “I’ve deleted a tweet I sent out about Jacob Rees-Mogg.
“I intended no offence to anyone who shares my faith but I now accept that it was ill judged and I apologise for any offence caused.”
Mr Rees-Mogg, a prominent Brexiteer, is a Roman Catholic and has attracted controversy over his strict pro-life stance on abortion.
