Former Love Island star Amy Hart has said she is going to freeze her eggs after learning she could go through the menopause in her 40s.
The reality TV personality, 27, said that she will go through the process in March having recently undergone a test that indicated that her fertility levels are low for her age.
Hart – whose mother, auntie and grandmother all had their children by the age of 25 before going through the menopause in their 40s – said that she considers freezing her eggs to have children as “insurance” in case she does not find a partner.
Hart told ITV’s Loose Women: “I was very unlucky in dating and my whole thing was, ‘What if I never have children?’
“My mum said to me, ‘Well if you get to 35 and you haven’t met the right person, we would financially and emotionally support you to help you have a baby on your own’.”
She said she recently underwent a process that she called a “fertility MOT”, adding: “It is an internal scan which wasn’t as bad as I thought. He had a look around and then turned the screen. He was like, ‘Would you like to see? This is your ovary and this is your other ovary’.”
Hart said: “Then they did a blood test for AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone, which could indicate how long you’ll be fertile for) and then they do the internal scan to look at your ovaries, and where I was in my cycle.
“I had the perfect number of eggs – I had 15 on one ovary and about eight on the other.
“He said, ‘Eggs are looking really good, so your AMH level is 8.5’, which I thought was out of 10, so I’m thinking, ‘Lovely, result!’ It turns out it’s between six and 20, which is actually quite low for my age.
Hart, who took part in Love Island in summer 2019, added: “So that’s your prognosis for how long you’ll be fertile for.
“They don’t know for sure – it’s not a guarantee, it might not work. But it’s an indicator and it fits in with my family history as well in that I’ll probably go through the menopause in early 40s.”
She added: “I’ve always wanted to freeze my eggs, so I thought, ‘I’d go to the fertility MOT, it’s not going to be an issue’. So when he said that, I was like, ‘Wow, okay’.”
Hart, who left the dating programme’s villa early after splitting with partner Curtis Pritchard several weeks into the series, said that she will freeze her eggs in March, and that she would “still do it” even if she met a partner.
She added: “I’m not going to live my life by whatever man I’ll meet.
“I’d love to meet someone, get married, have kids, that’s my dream. But if that doesn’t happen, I’ve got my insurance.”
