Ariana Grande is in the running to top the charts with her new song 7 Rings.
The US pop star’s track made it to the top spot at the halfway stage of the charts week, achieving 5.8 million streams since its release on Friday, the Official Charts Company said.
The song has a lead of more than 24,000 combined chart sales, pushing last week’s chart-topper Sweet But Psycho by Ava Max down into second place.
If the song retains its position on Friday, it will be her fourth UK number one, following her hits Problem, featuring Iggy Azalea, Bang Bang, with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj, and Thank U, Next.
It will be Grande’s 11th UK top 10 hit.
US singer Max is in line to finish the week at number two with her breakout single, ahead of Sam Smith and Normani’s Dancing With A Stranger at number three, Calvin Harris and Rag’n’Bone Man’s Giant at four and Miley Cyrus and Mark Ronson’s Nothing Breaks Like A Heart in fifth.
On the albums chart, the soundtrack for The Greatest Showman is on course to hold on to the number one spot for the 28th non-consecutive week.
The cast recording will match the success of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, which has spent a total of 28 weeks at the top of the charts since its release in 1967.
The Greatest Showman’s closest competitor this week is new entry Please Remain Seated by Thunder, in at number two.
However, the British rock band’s reimagined collection of classic songs is only 14 combined sales ahead of the mid-week number three.

Independent singer-songwriter Dodie is set to land a top five accolade with her new EP Human, which is biting at the heels of Thunder’s record, according to the Official Charts Company.
George Ezra’s Staying At Tamara’s is at number four at the halfway stage of the week, with Scottish indie rockers The Twilight Sad rounding off the top five with new entry It Won’t Be Like This All The Time.
Other high new entries this week look set to include James Blake at number six with Assume Form and Maggie Rogers at number 11 with Heard It In A Past Life.
