After a 10-year absence, Mercedes’ G-Class is making a return to British roads.
The first right-hand-drive models of what Mercedes say will be the ultimate luxury SUV go on sale in October.
The longest-serving passenger model Mercedes have ever produced (it celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, and global sales top 200,000) retains its familiar utilitarian look.
Buyers will be able to choose from a 221bhp G 350 CDI or the range-topping G 55 AMG Kompressor, which produces 500bhp and can get from 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds.
Standard equipment is comprehensive, including automatic transmission, bi-xenon headlamps, leather heated seats with memory function, parking sensors, a flash stereo and plenty more.
There’s also a commercial version, the G 300 CDI Professional, which comes with a much lower standard spec.
A serious mud plugger, the G-Class comes with a low ratio setting on the gearbox, as well as a host of electronics to see it through the worst of terrain.
Predictably, none of this comes cheap.
Even the commercial version costs £57,975. G 350 CDI will start at £79,975 and the G 55 AMG Kompressor £114,975 — making a Range Rover look cheap.
