Volkswagen’s XL1 is a vision of a hyper-economical future

It covers more than 300 miles per gallon and emits just 24g/km of CO2 but you can’t buy it … yet.
The XL1 is the latest hyper-economical concept car from Volkswagen. Powered by an 800cc, 48hp two-cylinder diesel engine and a 27hp electric motor, it averages 313mpg on the combined cycle.
The XL1 isn’t too slow either, with 0-62mph achievable in 11.9 seconds and top speed electronically limited to 99mph.
Although the XL1 is a concept car, Volkswagen say its technology will inform a new generation of super-efficient vehicles.
