The wraps have finally come off the hotly-anticipated compact Range Rover, as the company announced its latest and boldest car will be called the Evoque.
The smallest, lightest and most fuel-efficient Range Rover ever, the three-door Evoque (a five-door version is expected later on) stays close to the LRX concept car.
Land Rover previewed the Evoque at a private event in London last week attended by Victoria Beckham, who was announced as a ‘creative design director’ for the brand.
Presumably, it was thought her creative input might help prevent the new Range Rover from becoming associated with footballers’ wives.
Anyway, it will be built at Land Rover’s Halewood factory in Liverpool, creating 1000 jobs, and sold in 160 countries.
There’s no word yet on power, but expect the 2.2 litre diesel from the Freelander to be the mainstay of the range.
It’s the first ever Range Rover (or Land Rover for that matter) to be offered as a two-wheel drive.
Buyers of the front-wheel drive version will enjoy C02 emissions below 130g/km and low fuel consumption (though official economy figures have not been released yet).
The company are remaining tight-lipped over price, although word in the industry is it’ll start around or just below £30,000 and max out somewhere around the £45,000 mark.
More will be revealed when the Evoque makes its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in September. It doesn’t hit our showrooms until summer 2011.
