Glenshee ski centre’s double celebration

The Easter weekend proved a bumper one for the Scottish ski centres and Glenshee in particular.

Stewart Davidson at Glenshee said, “We are past the 110,000 mark well over twice our figures last season.

“This season has seen the best snow and the most snow since 2001.

“Saturday was our 100th day of skiing as we have only lost four days due to the roads and two days stormbound.

“It is the continuity of cover that has made all the difference.”

Cairn Gorm had the funicular railway and eight other uplifts running, although the Ptarmigan is still buried in snow, to cater for 1600 skiers and boarders and 270 sightseers.

The centre has had well over 100,000 skiers this season but the heavy snow has caused some problems with road and funicular access due to drifting.

There have been more road closures than funicular closures but it was a nervous time on Friday for Lorna Rukin (32) and Ian Pursglove (38), from Warwickshire, who had set their hearts on being married at the top of the mountain.

Heroic efforts by staff saw the funicular dug out and running by 1pm and the wedding was able to go ahead.

Nevis Range managing director Marian Austin is also delighted with the season so far.

She said, “We had been looking for 16,000 skiers in 2008/2009 and 18,000 this year. We have now had over 32,000 this season.

“We had four inches of snow overnight and we should have snow here for a long time yet. The holidays end on the 18th so we will look at things then, including possibly weekends only.”

The 370 skiers and boarders were outnumbered by the 480 on the gondola system though.

Over at The Lecht, the day started with miserable weather which cleared to give a beautiful afternoon.

There were 500 people out and spokeswoman Pat Mathieson said, “The weather has been kinder this year and we have only had five days when we were stormbound, which is not bad.”

At Glencoe, Donna Comrie said, “We had all uplifts running and had over 300 people out, although visibility was poorer.

“There is a lot of snow, particularly on the upper mountain, and we will be open for a couple of weeks yet hopefully.”
