Increasing numbers of visitors are flocking to one of Perthshire’s most popular mountain walks, prompting plans for improved visitor facilities.
More than 7000 local and visiting walkers now take the paths to the summit of Ben Vrackie near Pitlochry each year.
The 2759ft Corbett offers relatively easy and safe access to “an authentic mountain experience” even for people with limited hillwalking experience.
Once at the summit of Ben Vrackie meaning Speckled Hill the attraction is even more obvious, as walkers enjoy stunning views of the surrounding countryside and mountains.
As a result of its growing popularity, the demand for parking has begun to outstrip what is available, leading to problems with cars parked on nearby roads.
The car park and path to the summit were created by Perth and Kinross Council following an agreement with the landowner in the early 1990s.
There has since been substantial spending on paths to improve access, with works costing just over £100,000 completed in 2004.
After recent discussions with the same landowner, the proposal is now to establish a new car park near the existing one, subject to planning permission.
An area of ground currently being used for grazing has been identified and the project will be considered by members of Perth and Kinross Council’s environment committee this week.
Environment convener Councillor Alan Grant said, “Many people visit Ben Vrackie every year and enjoy the stunning scenery and views in this part of Perthshire.
“The proposed extra parking area is intended to ensure they can continue to do this without disrupting their fellow visitors or land management work taking place.”
