Dead seal washed up at Monifieth will be left for ‘nature to take its course’

Angus Council says it has no plans to remove the rotting carcase of a seal washed up at Monifieth.
The dead seal continues to attract attention, days after it was first spotted at a picturesque spot near the coastal path.
The mammal was washed ashore towards the end of last week and is lying at the point where the Dighty Water meets the estuary underneath the wooden bridge near the Balmossie rail platform.
Local dog walker Scott Robertson reckoned the animal had been there since at least last Friday.
“It is not the first time this has happened,” he said. “We had one come ashore a bit further up the coast and was there for 10 days, easy.”
When asked if it planned to remove the seal, a spokesman for the council said, ” The seal carcass at Monifieth beach is in an inaccessible location which can’t be safely reached for removal by staff, or by using equipment, so we plan to let nature take its course.
“Our general advice to the public is not to approach or touch stranded animals, whether dead or alive, nor to allow their dogs to do so.”
