A Montrose councillor is urging the whole town to get behind a campaign to buy a Spitfire in celebration of its wartime heritage.
The air station heritage centre is hoping to have a life-size replica of the fighter plane in place at the museum gates in time for the former air station’s centenary in 2013.
The fibreglass replica will cost between £40,000 and £50,000 and will possibly be painted in Norwegian colours.
Mark Salmond, who is a member of the heritage centre, said the campaign would be an opportunity to raise the profile of the town.
“We have to do fund-raising and we want to make it a community project, ” he told a meeting of the Montrose Together partnership.
“The museum is one of our major tourist attractions and it’s important for the town too. There is an opportunity here for the museum to raise its profile within the town, and for the town too.
“A good example was the Bamse project which raised the profile of Montrose all over the world, and we can use this project to raise it again.”
