The Abertay Historical Society launched its latest book, a revision of Broughty Castle And The Defence Of The Tay, at the Castlegreen leisure centre.
A collaboration between the late Sir Francis Mudie, David Walker and Iain MacIvor, it was first published in 1970 but has not been reprinted for over three decades.
It charts the history of the castle from the 15th century through to the second world war.
The latest edition includes a foreword by Kirsty Owen of Historic Scotland, who was a guest speaker at the event.Important roleCo-author David Walker, an emeritus professor of architectural history at St Andrews University, also spoke extensively about the important role the castle had played in the last few centuries.
A “Dundonian through and through,” Professor Walker was born and brought up in Broughty Ferry and said that being taken to the castle was one of his earliest memories and helped foster his interest in history.
He added, “Having been a member of Abertay Historical Society since I was a teenager, I thought it was important the castle got the recognition it deserves.”Contributions praisedSociety president Jan Merchant praised the work of all of those involved in revising the text.
An archivist with Perth and Kinross Council, Ms Merchant said the book was one of the first she read when she moved to the area from England in the early 1980s.
She added, “It’s great to finally have a revised edition, and I hope it will deepen people’s understanding of the castle.”
