The plus fours of the 19th century golfer sat in sharp contrast to the 21st century gear on display at Montrose yesterday.
Despite the wind and rain, the attractions of the area’s golf heritage proved irresistible to a visiting group of Chinese golfers.
They were taking part in the Tartan Day International Golf Challenge, which teed off at Montrose before it goes on to other courses at St Andrews, Gleneagles and then Carnoustie.
The event consistently attracts highly-experienced golfers worldwide and this year 22 Chinese golfers are competing for the first time.
They snapped up the chance to step back into the early years of Royal Montrose Golf Club and, suitably attired, took part in a hickory shaft tournament over the links with club members.
“It was a challenge,” said Shanghai golfwear manufacturer Simon Sung.
The attire of the 1800s offered a stark contrast to the 21st century range he has developed under a trademark agreement with Angus Council holder of the Carnoustie Country brand.
The idea for the range now being promoted to the Chinese market grew out of his participation in a Tartan Day International Golf event in the county.
