J. M. Barrie enthusiasts will soon be able to raise a special glass to toast the Peter Pan creator”s birthday.

With Kirriemuir about to launch a major programme of celebration to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of arguably the town’s most famous son, one local publican has commissioned a cask ale for visitors to savour alongside the varied events.

Jim Glendinning, owner of the Roods Bar for the past couple of years, has been developing the pub’s real ale reputation in recent months and said the Barrie milestone was worth celebrating.

“We wanted to do something of our own for the Barrie 150th anniversary festival so we have got the Inveralmond Brewery to produce a special cask of Pan Ale and we’re sure people will enjoy it,” said Jim.

“The label features the statue of Peter Pan playing the flute, which most people will recognise from the town centre.”

The first pints will be ready for pouring in time for the official launch of the tribute programme on May 6. Jim is confident Barrie’s memory will be fittingly marked.

“It was a wee bit slow at one stage but excitement is certainly building and I think there will be a lot in interest in Barrie and Kirriemuir this year,” he said.
