Theodore “Hiram” Brown, a world authority on coins, was at Taylor”s Auction Rooms, Montrose, focusing on items that will come under the hammer tomorrow.
The sale contains a wide variety of Scottish banknotes and Scottish and British coins, including examples dating back to 13th century.
The collection of coins over which Hiram cast his expert eye ranged from three Alexander III Scottish pennies, circa 1280, and 17th century Charles I 12-shilling piece and a James VI Thirstle Merk through to piedfort and Royal Mint proof sets from the early 21st century.
A piedfort or piedforte is a coin often exactly twice its normal weight and thickness.
The name derives from a French word meaning “heavy foot” and the coins are normally not circulated and struck for presentation purposes, for collectors or special occasions.
Britain’s Royal Mint is well known for creating many commemorative piedfort coins, especially since the 1980s.
The auction will include a large private collection of postcards from Dundee, Broughty Ferry, St Cyrus, Montrose and Aberdeen.
Also to be sold in the section is a wide range of cigarette cards featuring footballers, sportsmen and famous actors.
