A Montrose woman who has twice beaten cancer is planning a charity ball as a way of saying thank you to the medics who saved her life.
Barbara Hands (54) is back on her beat as a lollipop lady in Ferryden full of optimism.
She said, “I received marvellous care and attention both during and after being diagnosed with the disease. I am so grateful and want to give something back to help others.
“I take part in the yearly Race for Life but I’ve never tackled anything as big as this.
“But I thought a ball would be a great way to celebrate as raising money for a good cause and I’ve always wanted an excuse to get all glammed up.”
She is already half way to her target sale of 220 tickets for the ball, which will take place in the Links Hotel in Montrose on Saturday, October 30 in aid of Breast Cancer Care.
Music is by Mandate but there is to be a guest appearance by KJB, Montrose’s own disco/soul band from the 70s, who are getting back together again.
With no history of the disease in her family, diagnosis of cancer came as a devastating blow for Barbara, her husband Stephen an offshore worker, and daughter Laura (26), a financial controller in the oil industry.
She said, “It’s been an awful time, having both breasts removed. But I was lucky and didn’t need chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
“I am a very positive person and I think that has helped.”
