Mid Scotland and Fife Conservative MSP Elizabeth Smith is calling for improvements to an accident blackspot.

She has asked council officers to move a sign, which she said is blocking the vision of some drivers at the Madderty-St David’s crossroads.

The crossroads was the scene of a fatal accident in February and the scene of another accident last week.

The MSP cited her experience of using the junction as well as the concerns of local people who are complaining that it is virtually impossible to see right when going south from the Gorthy section of the road.

“Following the death of Carrie Anderson from Muthill at this junction in February, I spoke with police officers regarding what improvements could be put in place to ensure this is made a safer junction,” she said.

“I understand discussions are already under way regarding road surface markings but I am also calling for the main, south pointing signpost to Madderty-St David’s, Kinkell Bridge and Auchterarder to be put in a different place so as to maximise vision for the drivers who are exiting from the Gorthy road.

“Many people using this crossroads are farmers who are driving higher sided vehicles and their vision is completely obscured by this signpost and that is why I have asked Perth and Kinross Council to move it.

“What locals call ‘the Perth to Crieff back road’ already has several difficult sections and, as we move into winter time again, when most people are using this road in the darker mornings and evenings, we need to ensure their safety is a top priority. Moving this signpost is a very important part of that exercise.”
