Former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell has broken ranks to throw his weight behind The Courier’s fuel price regulator campaign.
Despite reticence from David Cameron and Nick Clegg, Sir Menzies is wholehearted in his support of our fight for fairer fuel.
Political heavyweights including Alex Salmond and John Swinney have already added their voices.
The additional support of such a senior member of one of the coalition parties is sure to heap further pressure on the under-fire Westminster government.
As members of the public continue to rally behind The Courier’s campaign, Sir Menzies pledged to press the case in a letter to Chancellor George Osborne.
“I am personally in favour of a fuel stabiliser,” the North East Fife MP told The Courier. “I have signed an early day motion in the Commons to that effect and will write to the Chancellor making the case for it.”
He also reminded Mr Cameron of earlier pledges to investigate the possibility of a price regulator.
“Last week the Prime Minister said on television that he had asked the Chancellor to look into the issue of a fuel stabiliser,” he said. “This was later repeated at briefings by Downing Street officials.”
Meanwhile, the early day motion signed by Sir Menzies states that a regulator such as the one suggested by The Courier would be a “pragmatic” way to help both hard-pressed families and businesses.
Meanwhile, prices at some Scottish pumps this week hit a high of a staggering £1.58 a litre.
