A large part of a derelict Kinross-shire hotel has been totally destroyed by a ferocious fire that took fire crews most of the day to control.
Around 20 firefighters attended the blaze which ripped through the Gartwhinzean Hotel near Powmill on Monday, with huge plumes of black smoke billowing into the air.
Crews were called out at 4.58am, with four appliances, an operational support unit and an aerial platform ladder in use to try to contain the fire.
The majority of the southern annexe of the hotel was totally destroyed, with a passer-by saying it resembled the ”aftermath of a bomb”.
The cause of the fire is unknown but it is understood that an investigation will take place.
A spokesman for Tayside Fire and Rescue said that there were no reports of any injuries and the building was understood to be unoccupied.
As a result of the fire, the A977 was closed in both directions at Powmill for nearly nine hours, with southbound traffic being diverted via the A823 and A91.
Northbound traffic was diverted via the A907 and M90. The A977 was eventually reopened just before 2pm.
The Gartwhinzean Hotel closed shortly after being sold as part of a deal between the collapsed Swallow group and investment company Gelink.
It is now under the control of local firm Thomson Homes, which plans to raze the hotel and build retirement homes on the site.
