Tragedy struck on Sunday as a diver in his 50s died after getting into difficulties off the east coast.
Forth Coastguard received a call shortly before 1pm to report a diver, in waters some 13 miles off Fife Ness, was in trouble.
Lifeboats from Anstruther and Dunbar rushed to the scene as a search and rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer in Northumberland was scrambled.
With the lifeboats quickly on the scene, the diver was brought to the surface and taken on board the diving vessel.
He was then airlifted by helicopter and whisked to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, but could not be saved.
His devastated diving colleagues headed back to land at Eyemouth in Berwickshire.
Lothian and Borders Police have launched an investigation.
A spokesman for the force said: ”Lothian and Borders Police are investigating the sudden death of a man in his 50s after he took ill during a diving trip, which set off from Eyemouth in the Scottish Borders.
”The man was taken to Ninewells Hospital after members of his group raised the alarm around 2.30pm.
”However, despite the best efforts of medical staff he later passed away. Inquiries are ongoing into the full circumstances surrounding this death.”
Earlier this year two divers were taken to hospital after being rescued in the Firth of Forth.
A diving group called the coastguard after the pair, who were diving near the Bass Rock, failed to resurface.
Happily, they were found quickly and taken to North Berwick by helicopter and later transferred to hospital by ambulance.
Last year a man died off the coast at Methil after getting into difficulties.
