An estimated £20,000 will be raised for research from the “absolutely fantastic” Cancer Research UK Relay for Life held at Caird Park in Dundee at the weekend.
The 20 teams from Tayside and Fife who took part in the 24-hour event included two Dundee men Darren Chalmers and Nick Neill who each completed 208 laps of the track, equating to two double marathons.
There was also a year-old child who toddled around a lap.
Bt no matter how many or how few circuits were managed, event chairwoman Hazel Feilder said all who took part were heroes.
“I can’t praise them highly enough,” she said after the final laps were completed at 1pm on Sunday. “It’s been warm, cold, wet, dry we’ve had the lot but it’s been an absolutely fantastic event.
“It has been about remembering people who have been lost to cancer and celebrating people who have survived.
“The first lap at 1pm on Saturday was so uplifting because it was carried out by 35 men and 35 women who have survived cancer.
“It’s been a great, non-stop 24-hour event to symbolise the fact that cancer is ever-present and never stops.”
Cancer Research UK spends £6 million a year in the laboratories at Ninewells Hospital.
