Memorabilia relating to the first overland expedition in the Antarctic arrived in Dundee this week ahead of a new exhibition in the city.
Archive material from the 1955-58 Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition will go on display at Discovery Point after being loaned by the family of a pharmacist involved in the epic journey.
Items featured include photographs, letters, maps and an inventory of medical supplies taken on the trek, which was led by legendary explorers Vivian Fuchs and Edmund Hilary.
Dundee Heritage Trust has been able to display the items after they were loaned by the family of Charles Forbes Ross, who helped to design the packaging of medical supplies taken on the expedition.
Julie Millerick, the curator for Dundee Heritage Trust, said, “The expedition is very significant due to its historic achievement, making it a fascinating area to research.
“Representing the modern age of heroic exploration, building on the work of previous explorers such as Captain Scott, it will nicely complement our existing collections.”
The exhibit will be on display at the entrance to Discovery Point until the end of March.
